Installation

Installation of electric fences is a complex process that requires professional training and equipment. It also requires permission from local authorities/body corporates and neighbors. The first step involves marking out the perimeter of your property and installing corner posts. It is then a matter of stringing the wire across the designated fence line, securing it to each insulator with care. The number of strands and their spacing depends on the purpose of your fence, which can range from containing livestock to deterring wildlife.

The next step is deciding on the type of energizer (fence charger) you need to power the fence. You can find solar, battery, and mains powered options. It is important to note that an energizer needs to be connected to a grounding rod to complete the circuit. An effective earth system will return current to the energizer when an animal touches the wire. This is a safety feature that helps prevent shorts, which are often caused by overgrown vegetation and cracked insulators.

Maintenance

Use a voltage tester to assess whether the fence is getting an adequate current, which can be compromised by vegetation touching wires (which drains power) or by faulty insulators reducing the conductivity of the lines.
